Taken Scout's following needs into consideration if you are wishing to adopt this beautiful boy.
• Scout needs 30mins+ walking a day (he loves a long morning walk with a shorter walk in the evenings as well).
• A single level home – but some entrance steps are fine.
• Grassed yard with space to Zoomie and continue to build strength in his back legs.
• Children must be 8 years or older.
• He is fine without another dog as he is happy being by himself, though will whimper a little when you leave, but only because he loves you!
• He has spent school hours alone during the day without problem.
• Likes to sleep in your bedroom at night!
• He will need constant access to outside. His toileting will need to be carefully managed – e.g. needs to be taken outside when you return home from a day out, and first thing in the morning.
Scout is an adorable 11-month-old Greyhound Pup, who requires a little more attention than most greyhounds, but he is so well worth the effort. Scout has some neurological issues with his hind legs – particularly the right leg. At the beginning of this year, he was found collapsed in the field and completely unable to stand/walk and so was taken into the care of R2R. Subsequent specialised vet tests have shown that he likely ingested a toxin which caused this collapse.
But Scout is so much better now! He is a true boy scout and with lots of loving care he has soldiered on and improved beyond our expectations. He gets stronger every week, and can now walk, navigate stairs, jump, run, Zoomie, and leap super high!
Scout is affectionate and loves pats and playing with any toy (or piece of clothing!) he finds. Scout is VERY intelligent! He walks very well on a lead, is not perturbed by other dogs however can sometimes become a little frightened by an unfamiliar letter box! He has spent time with other dogs and whilst he is interested initially, he settles quickly and interacts with them very well. So, he would be fine living with another dog.
Being a pup, Scout is more energetic than older greyhounds. We have found he is very calm after longer walks (he can now manage over 35mins even with hills) but is also calm and happy after a 15-minute stroll. Scout will need a grassed yard as he just loves to Zoomie at least 2-3 times per day, and interestingly this helps to encourage a wee!
Scout is a very friendly dog both around adults and children, our kids are 7, 9 and 11 and he has been awesome with them. We have noticed he treats them like siblings – which can be a bit of an issue when he gets revved up. So, ideally kids in his forever home need to be 8+ years.
Scout is super easy to travel with by car, covering 3-hour trips to the country without a problem. He does struggle to get into the car and still needs assistance to lift him in. Just recently he has managed to jump safely out of a high car by himself.
When this “barely able to walk boy” came into R2R, the neurological issues with his rear end meant he was completely incontinent for both urine and faeces. Thankfully, the latter with treatment sorted itself out and we have learned to manage his urinary issues, so most of the time they are barely an issue. Scout can hold on well, but sometimes forgets he needs to go wee and leaves it too late to get outside. We will happily teach you how we have learned to manage him!
Scout is truly a beautiful boy and would make an amazing addition to a loving family, couple or single person who has a little more patience to learn his unique needs. We just adore him!
